From hours to a gross paycheck number

The mistake this calculator exists to prevent: multiplying "38:30" as 38.3 hours. Payroll math needs decimal hours (38:30 = 38.5), and money math needs cents, not floating-point dollars. Enter time either way, add your rate, and optionally the overtime hours your employer pays at time-and-a-half.

This is gross pay, what your hours earn before taxes and deductions. To get the hours themselves from clock-in/out times, start at the time card calculator; to split a week into regular, overtime and double-time hours under federal or state rules, use the overtime calculator.

Frequently asked questions

Multiply the hours by the rate: 38 hours at $17 is $646.00. Enter time as 38, 38:30 or 38.5. The calculator converts h:mm to decimal correctly (38:30 is 38.5 hours, not 38.3) and computes in exact cents.

No: it's gross pay, before taxes and deductions. Withholding depends on your W-4, state and benefits; that's payroll-provider territory, and a generic calculator guessing at it would be wrong often enough to matter.

Put your overtime hours in the second field, they're paid at 1.5× the rate. For double-time or state daily-overtime rules, the overtime calculator works out the split from your per-day hours automatically.

A common estimate is rate × 2,080 (40 hours × 52 weeks): $18/hour is about $37,440 a year. The calculator shows this projection when your hours equal a standard 40-hour week.
