Decimal hours are minutes ÷ 60 rounded to two places: 15 minutes is 0.25, 20 is 0.33, 45 is 0.75. This chart covers all sixty minutes so a paper timesheet can be converted line-by-line without a calculator. The quarter-hour values (0.25 / 0.50 / 0.75) are exact; everything else is the standard two-place rounding.

Frequently asked questions

Find the minutes portion of the time in the chart and read off the decimal. For 7:38, look up 38 minutes (0.63) and the time is 7.63 hours. The decimal is minutes ÷ 60 rounded to two places, the convention payroll systems use.

Divide the minutes by 60 and add to the hours: 7 hours 45 minutes is 7 + 45÷60 = 7.75. Payroll convention rounds to two decimal places, so 20 minutes is 0.33 and 50 minutes is 0.83.

Because an hour has 60 minutes, not 100. Reading 7:30 as "7.3" is the single most common timesheet mistake: 30 minutes is half an hour, so 7:30 is 7.5 decimal hours.

No: add the minutes first, then convert once. Five days of 7:50 is 39:10, which is 39.17 hours; adding five rounded 7.83s gives 39.15 and shorts the week by over a minute. The batch converter's total is computed the correct way.
